Much of what we do with the Internet would have never been predicted in advance just by asking, "What would happen if you connect a bunch of computers together with common protocols?". No one, for instance, would have seen the rise of Wikipedia, or even social networks, or how you can post questions in forums and perfect strangers would answer them with with no hope of anything in return. No one really would have foreseen the open source movement. In fact, most of the things that we do with the Internet are good and positive. I mean, certainly we are all aware of the nefarious uses of the Internet, but primarily it's used to promote connections between people. I think artificial intelligence is going to be the same way. When we are looking at the technology and what it's capable of doing, we're going to be blind to the kinds of things that will seem obvious in retrospect. Uses which, I suppose would be mostly for the good, that will change our lives in ways that we can't understand now.
