In this episode, Byron talks about AGIs and consciousness.
Transcript
Would an artificial general intelligence need to be conscious? It's an open question, nobody knows. On the one hand, much of our cognitive work is outside of our conscious experience. But your conscious experience of the world--feeling warmth and tasting pineapple and all of that--is only a small part of what you do cognitively. But then the question is, is that part really a gateway to how we build our general intelligence? Nobody really knows, and until that question is answered we can't really speculate that much on when we might get a general intelligence.
