In this episode, Byron talks about two of human's greatest abilities: pattern recognition and transfer learning.

Transcript

Humans have two great abilities--transfer learning and pattern recognition. I've talked about transfer learning before--our ability to take knowledge from one area and apply it to another one.

We can, however, do pattern recognition far better than any machine can. We, for instance, see animals in clouds. We see saints on pieces of toast. We do this because of our massively parallel brains.

Now the interesting thing is that you and I can see the same horse in the clouds. If I say look there's a horse, you can say "Oh, yes, I see that." And yet an artificial intelligence still has a hard time telling a hairless cat from a normal cat.
